Answer: The octet rule states that, atoms tend to gain, lose, or share electrons to achieve a stable outer shell containing 8 electrons (an octet), similar to the electronic configuration of noble gases.

2. Why noble gases are non-reactive?

Answer: Noble gases are non-reactive because they have a completely filled outermost electron shell (stable octet). Due to this stable electronic configuration, they do not easily gain, lose, or share electrons with other atoms.

1. Name the two types of ions present in NaCl.

Answer: Sodium ion Na⁺ (cation) and chloride ion Cl⁻ (anion) .

2. How many shells are present in Na+ ion?

Answer:  Atomic number of sodium (Na) is 11 .

 The electronic configuration of Na is 2. 8. 1 .

When it loses one electron to form Na⁺, the configuration becomes  2 . 8 .

Therefore, Na⁺ ion has 2 shells (K and L shells).

4. Name the type of force of attraction present in ionic compounds.

Answer: The force of attraction present in ionic compounds is electrostatic force of attraction between positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions).

Answer:  In a sodium chloride (NaCl) lattice, each Na⁺ ion is surrounded by 6 Cl⁻ ions.

So, 6 chloride ions (Cl⁻).

1. Why ionic compounds conduct electricity in aqueous solution?

Answer: Ionic compounds conduct electricity in aqueous solution because they dissociate into free-moving ions. These ions carry electric current through the solution.

2. Covalent compounds have low melting point than an ionic compound why?

Answer: Covalent compounds have low melting points because the force of attraction between their molecules is weak, so less heat energy is needed to separate them. Ionic compounds have strong electrostatic forces between ions.

3. Explain the formation of   ion from Na atom.

Answer: Sodium (Na) has atomic number 11 and electronic configuration 2, 8, 1. To attain a stable octet, it loses one electron from its outermost shell and forms a Na⁺ ion with electronic configuration 2, 8.

      Na  →   Na⁺  +  e⁻

4. How would you explain the bonding in  ?

Answer:  The atomic number of Mg is 12 .

 In MgCl₂ (magnesium chloride), bonding is ionic (electrovalent).

Magnesium (Mg) has 2 valence electrons, and chlorine (Cl) needs 1 electron to complete its octet. So, magnesium loses 2 electrons, one to each of two chlorine atoms.

Mg → Mg²⁺ + 2e⁻

2Cl + 2e⁻ → 2Cl⁻                       

Then, Mg²⁺ and 2Cl⁻ ions are held together by a strong electrostatic force of attraction, forming MgCl₂.
