Which of the following are AP? If they are in AP, find their first terms and common differences:
1. –5, –1, 3, 7, 11, ....
2. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, ...
3. 1, 4, 6, 7, 6, 4, ....
4. –6, – 3, 0, 3, 6, 9, ....
Solution: 1. –5, –1, 3, 7, 11, ....
Since, -1—5=-1+5=4 , -1—5=-1+5=4
, 3—1=3+1=4
, 3—1=3+1=4
,
7-3=11-7=4
It is an arithmetic progression (AP).
First term = – 5 and common difference = 4 .
2. 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, ...........
Since, 7-6=8-7=9-8=10-9=1
It is an arithmetic progression (AP).
First term = 6 and common difference = 1 .
3. 1, 4, 6, 7, 6, 4, .........
Since, 4-1=3 , 6-4=2 , 7-6=1 , ………
It is not an arithmetic progression (AP).
4. –6, – 3, 0, 3, 6, 9, ....
Since, -3--6=-3+6=3 , 0--3=0+3=3 , 6-3=3 ,9-6=3
It is an arithmetic progression (AP).
First term = – 6 and common difference = 3 .
